Why Install Photoluminescent Exit Signs In Commercial Buildings

By Essie Osborn

The conventional signage for exits require the use of light source in order to operate, however, if that source is disrupted as may occur in times of fires and other disasters, it renders the markings useless. However, with the new technology of photoluminescent exit signs, you can get very reliable markings which allow people to evacuate safety when emergencies strike. Safety is of major concern when it comes to emergencies.

When the lights go off, they release the energy in form of a glow. It is the glow which helps people find the space and be able to see the routes that lead them out of the building. Most of the products you get cannot function without an external source of light. This means that if lights go off and there is no backup generator, the signage products are as good as no signs at all. This is because people cannot be able to find the routes leading them out of buildings.

It can be devastating because many people remain trapped inside buildings when they could actually have escaped from the scene. The photoluminescents are designed to work in areas where visibility of emergency markers is likely to be impaired. If lights go off and the emergency generator fails to function properly, it can be a disaster especially in buildings that use conventional types of emergency signage.

Trapped inside, it only makes the situation bad. It can also be difficult for firefighting and evacuation team to work effectively to save people. Since they cannot see the routes leading in and out of a building, their activities are impaired. In the past, business premises owners have has to bear the cost of lighting that provides easy visibility for the traditional forms of emergency signage.

When there are no lights, these products glow and allow people to see the routes to get out of buildings. They can work in complete darkness requiring no external source of light. These signage products are not only important for the people trapped in buildings but also for the firefighters.

What this means is that once they have absorbed the light, they continue to function when there is darkness. People trapped in a building can be able to see the exit routes and get out the danger zone as fast as they can. It reduces the panic which people exhibit when emergencies occur.

The installation of the self illuminated signage needs to be handled by qualified and experienced technicians. They have to be placed in the right locations so that they are easily visible in complete darkness. While they can work in darkness, if they are not installed properly, their visibility may still be impaired.

Since the glow may not last for long, considering that it can take several hours before it fades out completely, by that time people are expected to have escaped from the buildings. The New York City demands that all commercial high rise buildings that are over 75 feet tall be installed with reliable as well as effective photoluminescent markers to aid people in swift evacuations.
