Why It Is Beneficial To Comply With NYC Local Law 26

By Krystal Branch

There are many requirements and codes that people have to follow when they want to have a building of their own. For example, they have to comply with NYC local law 26 if they want to keep buildings safe. This requirement includes having photoluminescent marks along exit paths. With this, escaping the building can be facilitated faster, with minimum injuries to people.

The mark is made out of pigments that automatically charge when properly exposed to light. The charge will then be spent on lighting when the original light source accidentally goes off. The mark will then emit strong lights even when it is in total darkness. This will show direction to the escapees for their escape.

Another requirement for the mark is that it should have a long lifespan. It should then be strategically placed at those locations where they are always visible. They should be easily cleanable too. With this, it will not be difficult for people to escape when necessary and the in-charge of the maintenance of the building will not find it difficult to clean these marks.

Remember that the one who deals with the compliance of the building to these standards is the New York Department of Buildings. Under this department, the MEA is created to issue the compliance certificates. This is also the department who will be assisting the constructors with the selection of the materials for this kind of purpose.

For the marks, they are usually positioned on the stairways or the passageways. This is what has been asked of building owners when they are dealing with the marks. Since this is a place where most accidents happen when people are not careful, they have to make sure that they follow the standards that the OSHA and ADA has set for the construction of this building.

One cannot avoid exposing the exit paths and stairways to friction. In fact, it is frequently exposed to friction that it makes the rate for wear and tear becomes faster. Even with simple cleaning, the exit paths and stairways are subjected to scratches. Environmental elements also help with this. Since this is the case, one has to inspect the durability of the exit paths and stairways regularly.

The markers should be inspected and cleaned periodically. This is so that they do not accumulate any dirt and dust. When these accumulate, the markers will lose its effectiveness greatly. There will be less light that it can absorb and thus it will be inadequately charged. When there is a blackout, it will have low performance.

Being slip-free is important too. This should be the case, regardless of whether the mark is wet or dry. This minimizes liabilities, especially those caused by slip fall accidents. Always bear in mind this requirement so that one can avoid getting injuries or having the escapees injured.

Make sure to properly comply with NYC local law 26. For the owners of buildings, this is not an option for them anymore but already a requirement. One should not hesitate to follow through with this requirement since this will work in the favor of the building owner as well as occupants.
