Bike Flags Make For Safe Bicycle Riding

By Marcie Goodman

Because bicycling can be done as a family activity, it can be a gratifying experience. It is something that can be done solo or as a group. You can get exercise while doing it or you can use it as a mode of transportation. Riders should consider using items that promote their safety if they are going to be doing much riding. Items, such as helmets, gloves, reflecting items, lights and armour such as shin guards can promote safety. Bike flags can also keep a rider visible and safe.

Just like anything, accidents can and do happen in the world of biking. Head injury is a common occurrence when wrecking a bike. Both adults and children should wear a snug fitting helmet while riding their bikes. The helmet should be certified for biking and should fit so that it does not fly off should an impact occur. This will help the protection of the head during an accident.

Because body armour can be hot and restrict movement, it is not a popular item among riders. In fact, unless a person participates in extreme riding, this equipment might not be that necessary. However, extreme riders will find that shin guards and other protective gear can help them to remain uninjured in a crash. Parents whose children are not extreme riders should teach their kids about bicycle safety rather than make them wear body armour.

The safety of the rider can be increased by using reflectors and reflecting clothing and tape. The tape can be used on the helmet. A red read reflector located under the seat will help approaching motorists to know something is up ahead. Bikes usually have reflectors in the spokes as well as the pedals and on the handlebars. Reflecting clothing will also also drivers to see something up ahead.

Riders who are going to be on their bikes for a long time often prefer to wear gloves. There are gloves made for riding in cold weather, such as down mittens. Padded gloves can be helpful in protecting the skin while holding the handlebars for many miles. Simple gloves can work to protect the skin should a fall occur.

Adding flashing lights to the back of the bicycle will alert motorists that they are coming up on a bicycle rider. It is also advisable to add a headlight to the handlebar area. Any size of light will work, although it is to be noted that the larger the light, the more visible the rider.

A riders presence can be made known by using a flag. This is particularly helpful to those riders who are low to the ground as they are often much harder to see. Riders who are riding on the open road for extreme distances also find the use of flags to be helpful.

Everything you do has the potential of being dangerous and this holds true to bicycling. However, using gloves, helmets, reflectors, bike flags and lights can help to increase the safety of this fun activity. All you must do is learn the rules of safety and take some precautions in order to make this a fun thing for everyone to do.
