Tips For Carrying Out Electronic Equipment Storage

By Dorothy Perry

Electronic equipment is sensitive. Since, electronics have many individual pieces and parts, they need special care before storing them. Storage conditions can affect the future functionality of electronics. When planning to carry out long term electronic equipment storage, you should take several steps to prepare the items so that they will remain in good condition.

You should ensure that you have the appropriate storage solutions like moving and packing supplies. Examples of packing supplies are bubble wrap, sturdy cartons, packaging tape, scissors, markers and newsprint. You can use the original storage boxes if they are available. The gadgets will fit well is such boxes because they are designed for them.

If you are planning to store electronics such as computers, you should back up the data. This way, you will be prepared if the hard drives fail to function after being stored for a long duration of time. Electronic gadgets are designed in such a way that they should not remain unused and without power for a long time. Components such as hard drives may malfunction if they remain unused for a long duration of time. You can ensure that your data is safe and secure by backing it up and storing it in an external hard disk, online or in other storage devices.

Most electronics have several pieces that make up the main device and complimentary components. Before storing the items, pull the individual pieces apart and store them individually. You should also keep the plugs separate because you will not store the electronic equipment while plugged in. If there are any CDs, DVDs or game cartridges in the equipment, remove them and keep apart so that they will not get stuck in drives or sustain damage over time.

It is essential to clean dirt and dust from electronics before storing them. It is hard for small amount of dirt and dust to cause damage to electronics. However, if left for a long time, dirt and dust can damage the electronics. It is therefore wise to wipe down all the accessible surfaces to remove all contaminants from the electronic equipment. You can clean dust and debris from hard to access areas using a compressed air duster.

It is also important to cover monitors, screens and other items in canvas, cardboard, cotton or other materials that remain in good state during long term storage. If dust is present in the place you have kept your electronics, it will gather on these materials and not on the electronics. You should avoid covering electronic equipment in plastic as it can cause them to be vulnerable to moisture buildup over time.

If the equipment you need to store has batteries, ensure that you remove them. The battery container could get ruined if you were to let the batteries remain in electronic gadgets. Moreover, acid from the batteries could possibly damage the electronic equipment. Besides, it is difficult to clean acid and it can harm your skin if it comes into contact with it.

Storing electronics in the appropriate environment is also essential. Avoid storing the items in places that are too hot, windy, humid or cold. Climate controlled storage units are ideal for storing electronic devices for lengthy periods. They give you the opportunity to control the humidity and temperature levels your electronic devices are exposed to.
