Useful Information About Mosquito Repellents

By Kenneth Gibson

Mosquitoes are among insects whose main food source is animal and human blood. According to research findings, these insects can travel up to several miles to find a human or an animal to suck blood from. The hunting is mostly done at night, with daytimes used as a chance to sleep and rest. Dark and humid places provide the best locations for resting during the day. This is useful information on mosquito repellent.

Hiding places can be located outside the house in bushes or inside the house. Inside the house, these insects usually hide in dark places such as under furniture, inside closets, and behind beds. An environment that is cool and humid seems to favor their existence a lot. Breeding is usually done in pools of stagnant water. Thus, eliminating stagnant water sources can help reduce the problem.

Mosquitoes puncture the skins using their proboscis and insert it into the body. Once in the body, the tube-like structure siphons blood out and the insect drinks it. One can be bitten several times by just one insect in a night. The bite marks become reddish and swollen. One may also contract malaria from a single bite. Transmission of malaria happens through contamination of infected and uninfected blood in two people, caused by mosquitoes.

Mosquito infestations can be dealt with in many ways. One of the methods is clearing bushes surrounding homes. Other ways include spraying repellants and use of mosquito nets on beds and windows. Repellants are industrial manufactured products using common local ingredients. The efficiency level of a product is determined by the ingredients used in its composition.

The use of repellents involves spraying them around compounds and houses. To ensure efficiency, the repellent must be sprayed on a daily basis. As the effects of the product wears in off in the air, more should be sprayed. This is because, mosquitoes are often just nearby waiting for a chance to come back when the product wears off in the air.

Manufactured products may be very effective, but they also have several downsides. First, they may be expensive to buy. This is often the case especially if one has to spray them every day. Over time, it becomes expensive. Secondly, these products are associated with several medical conditions in both human beings and animals. They are also a major environmental hazard because they cause pollution in different forms.

Besides spraying the product around the compound and house, some are meant to be sprayed on skin. Spraying on the skin should be done when one is venturing into areas where mosquitoes exist in large numbers. These include caves and forested areas. Only parts of the body that are left bare should be sprayed. These include legs, hands, and necks.

Like stated above, these products can harmful to human health. Thus, one should be careful to ensure that they do not enter eyes, nostrils, mouth, and ears. The products are meant for external use only, and consumption can be dangerous. In case of accidental consumption, one should follow first aid instructions often available on the container of the product.
