Opening A Restaurant: It Might Be For You

By Danie Zolezzi

Unless you a part of the lucky few that had your parents supply you a regular income during college, you probably had to work to earn your spending money. Like many of us, you were probably putting in hours at some college town diner or bar. Did you ever consider that your experiences at this restaurant could potentially lead you to a career in the hospitality industry? Owning your own business is the dream for many people; here are four reasons why opening your own restaurant might be something you should consider.

You're the life of the party. If you love hosting dinner parties and entertaining guests, this might be the perfect industry for you. Owning a restaurant at its core is all about customer service. You have to put on a great show every night and if you don't you need to know how to fix it because all eyes are on you.

You have a passion for good food. Unless you plan on partnering with someone whose interests are solely in the cuisine and your interests are solely in the business aspects, you need to know good food. There is so much competition for restaurants that you have to have a decently good and unique product to succeed.

You are willing to put in the time. It may look like a life of luxury, full of delicious meals, fun dinner events and lots of revenue, but that's a myth. In reality, owning a restaurant is a lot of hard work for several hours a day. You must sacrifice a lot of your personal time in order to be successful (especially in the beginning). This can easily cause complications in your social life making this one of the most difficult aspects of the industry.

You always wanted to be your own boss. This is probably the best reason for opening a restaurant. Fulfilling a life long dream of working for you is the best perk of this business. You are working hard to achieve your own goal-- not that of someone else.

Opening a business is risky; opening a restaurant is riskier still. Being an owner is not all fun and glamorous the way many people imagine. It is definitely not for the faint of heart or mind. However, despite not being a culinary school graduate, many people are willing to risk everything for their business to succeed. If you can commit the time and effort, this could be a worthwhile business venture for anyone. Chew it over next time you are out to dinner at your favorite restaurant-- pun intended.
