Contract Scaffolding - How To Choose The Right Company

By Ania Stan

If you are thinking of contracting a scaffolding company, your first concern is likely to be whether they are reputable and experienced enough for your project. With large projects, mistakes or missed deadlines can be costly, so it is important that the company can work swiftly but competently.

The company you use should be experienced in various sized projects, from household scaffolding to large and complex buildings. It is more common now for companies to have websites that have examples of their previous work with good quality photos so you can check their experience.

Important Accreditations For Contract Scaffolding Companies

A simple way to check the competency of the company you use is to check the accreditations. These should be on the website or paperwork and can be checked online. The most relevant accreditations relate to safety and qualifications.

Some examples are:-

* CHAS " Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme

* CSCS " Construction skills certificate scheme

* CSCS " Construction skills certificate scheme

* CITB " Relating to apprenticeships

* CHAS " Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme

Any accreditations relating to safety, industry recognised training schemes and memberships to approved business groups or associations are all indicative of a reputable business.

Qualified Scaffold Erectors and Trainees

Health and safety is crucial at any site and scaffold erectors must be adequately trained to ensure they construct the scaffold correctly and safely. Training and certification in safety is essential to protect those using the scaffold and around the site, as well as the scaffold erectors themselves.

Scaffold erectors can be employed by the company or be self-employed on temporary contracts. Some companies have only employed staff for consistency of work and experience. Arguably, it is preferable to have a team that are used to working together as they may be more efficient as a result. A considerable amount of coordination and organisation is involved in large projects so this is worth considering.

For this reason, apprenticeships are mutually beneficial to contract scaffolding companies as the apprentice can be trained up to then be employed in the team they trained with. It is worth the investment for the company to train somebody from day one, to work competently in all areas of skills and safety, and as part of a team.

CAD Design Drawings Provided In-house

Most reputable companies will have in-house CAD design. This enables the company to create working drawings of the project and work out an accurate load list/bill of materials. As well as helping to ensure the scaffolds will be tidier, it also means they can erect the scaffolds quickly and accurately. They are essential for complex construction projects.
