Why Carbonless Printing Is Necessary In Business

By Rhea Solomon

One of the things you do not see much of, currently, is carbon paper. It used to be a staple in many industries as the way to get copies of an original. The invent of carbon less forms made this need go away which was a happy event for many employees. The carbonless printing industry still has a very large footprint on business papers.

Shipping documents are often printed on these as there needs to be a copy that is passed on to the client and one that has to go with the shipment. Restaurant checks are often on these as this will allow them to track orders closely. Anything that needs an immediate copy can be found on these handy forms.

The printers who do the work of printing these forms will have to be very careful and extremely critical in their registration of the copy on the page. The boxes or lines that are printed on these sheets must be lined up from the top sheet through all other sheets. Placing a check mark or writing some information onto the top sheet will transfer down to the bottom so it has to be lined up correctly.

Designing the form will be the first step and this will happen between the client and the printer. Drawing or simply writing the copy onto a piece of paper will start it and then it will be composed in a graphic arts or word processor program. This will be printed by the computer printer and presented for inspection. A printing plate will be made for an offset press to print them.

Not using carbon paper to get a copy means the paper printed on will be of a special type. This paper is coated, as it is being manufactured, on one or both sides. The colors will also be important as they indicate the purpose for which this sheet is used. They will be run through the press and collated in a specific way so two coated surfaces are facing each other in order to transfer the image being placed there.

The back of the first sheet will be coated with a special chemical. It will react with the coating or chemical on the top of the second sheet to transfer the image. If there is another sheet, that second sheet will also be coated on the back and the third sheet will have that chemical on its front side as well. It could get complicated if you are not thinking about it.

The printing and collating being done, the stack of papers is squared and weighted. The operator applies a special padding compound to the top, bottom or one of the sides in compliance to the printing order instructions. It knows where each form packet ends as it reacts with the chemical coating. This dries and then the finishing operator will fan the stack making individual packets for use.

Printing these carbon less forms still takes a lot of the printers time. There is a vital need for these forms as not everything can come out of a computer printer. There are a large number of these carbonless printing professionals in just about every community and also a number of them online. Clear images, an immediate copy and the easy with which these can be used is still a major draw for these fairly low tech office papers.
