Like any craft or discipline, networking has basic fundamentals that must be fully understood and lived as a part of your very being. You might think these networking fundamentals are self-evident, but go deep on them. Don't take them lightly and your networking will extend from good to great. Here are some networking fundamentals
Relationships: Networking is the art of making connections that develop into mutually beneficial relationships between outstanding people. We can build relationships with people who are mediocre in their lives and have mediocre relationships. Or we can choose to seek out and serve only the best. Your objective should be to shoot for the best within your reach. And then strive to land bigger and bigger fish. I know it can be difficult to hear, but there are people you can let go of in favor of the people who should be coming in. Could be time to pull some weeds and plant new flowers in other gardens.
Diversity. We are all different and have different levels of experience, different information, different skills and different areas of strength. A good networking circle has a diversity of people within it so that every member can learn from others and contribute their own uniqueness to the group. This way, the whole group is strong.
Reciprocity: one of the foundations of society is the give and take nature of coexisting with each other. We have to help one another, or none of us will survive, let alone excel in what we are seeking! Always look for ways that you can help others and add your experience and expertise to their lives. Give as much as you can, and you will see that others will be eager to give back to you as well.
In networking, reciprocating, returning favors, and giving back are not merely expected: they're demanded. It's the price you pay to be a member with high caliber individuals looking to serve one another. As a general rule, if you are prepared to give at least two or three times for every one time you receive, you are going to master serving the network and the "abundance juice," as my mentor Jeff Walker calls it, will always find a way to fill your cup.
Trust: This is an essential ingredient for networking success. Mutual trust must exist. Top networkers won't go out of their way or bend over for people who do not consistently deliver the best; anything less would be a stain on their reputation and limit the ROI. And trust changes the speed at which everything happens. With trust action can be taken quickly. And with quick action you will outpace the market. If you outpace the market you are a step ahead of others. If you are a step ahead of others you profit in life.
